Nuclear New Build at Hinkley
The proposed construction of 2 new nuclear power units at Hinkley presents major opportunity for suppliers in the region. Work has begun to develop a local supply chain database to support the various work streams for this major constructions project. In terms of value the estimate is that about 30% of the investment will be into the “nuclear island“ and the remaining 70% will be for the associated civil engineering works. EDF, their key partners and suppliers as well as the local agencies will be communicating the opportunities together with the quality and safety requirements as the project details are decided. (The project is still in the planning consultation phase).

In the meantime assembly of some elements of the UK supply chain to support the nuclear new build proposed at Hinkley is being undertaken. In Somerset the county and district authorities together with the business support agencies are working to ensure that local businesses get the opportunity to be considered for the supply chain opportunities as they arise. Hence the interim requirement for this briefing note.
A specific request has been received from the company who is proposing to build the nuclear reactors at Hinkley, to assist in current requirement to identify companies who may be able tosupply electrical equipment required as part of the nuclear island.
These are:
MV-Switchgears, LV-Switchgears
Batteries, UPS
Containment Cable Penetrations
Transformers, AC/DC Converters, DC/AC Inverters
Cables (LOCA Cables and Non-LOCA Cables)
Cable Trays including Support Structures
Cable Seals, Junction Boxes
Fire Alarm systems and fire damper control
Quality & Safety Standards
Clearly the suppliers for all the elements of the nuclear reactors will need to have the proven skills and capabilities and of course will be required to meet exacting standards of quality and safety. However if action to develop the required standards is taken now then the relevant accreditation requirements could be met prior to when any tenders are being offered. There is support available for companies who decide to get themselves in position.
