Family Firm Pipex of Plymouth wins Best SME at top business Oscar
A Plymouth firm won a top business Oscar for Best SME at the national Manufacturing Excellence Awards (MX2010). Family firm Pipex Ltd, which manufactures products ranging from warship piping to wastewater products, staved off stiff competition to win the award, sponsored by the National Skills Academy for Manufacturing. MX2010 is run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

Two employees from Plymouth’s Hi-TAMS, a successful start-up business specialising in the manufacture, servicing and support of hi-tech products and services for large corporate businesses, have recently completed a Six Sigma Greenbelt training course, courtesy of MAS-SW.
The feelings and future of SW manufacturers revealed
In line with the recent positive manufacturing index from the Chartered Institute for Purchasing and Supply (CIPS), the results from the latest quarterly South West Manufacturing Barometer shows regional manufacturers reporting increased turnover, recovering order books together with positive indications for future investments.
Nuclear New Build at Hinkley
The proposed construction of 2 new nuclear power units at Hinkley presents major opportunity for suppliers in the region. Work has begun to develop a local supply chain database to support the various work streams for this major constructions project. In terms of value the estimate is that about 30% of the investment will be into the “nuclear island“ and the remaining 70% will be for the associated civil engineering works. EDF, their key partners and suppliers as well as the local agencies will be communicating the opportunities together with the quality and safety requirements as the project details are decided. (The project is still in the planning consultation phase).
£Millions invested in low carbon skills
Low carbon businesses across the South West are set to benefit from a low carbon, high skills initiative, worth up to £2.4m. The initiative has been funded in large part by the South West RDA (with a £1.2m investment) and will be co-ordinated by Universities South West. It aims to help the region in its move towards a low carbon economy through the provision of demand-led higher level skills for employees.
