Henry Colbeck Ltd - 2008
Henry Colbeck, based in Gateshead was formed in 1893 and originally supplied fuels before moving into edible oils for fish and chip shops. The Company remains under the ownership of the Colbeck family and is the oldest independent supplier to fish and chip shops in the United Kingdom.
Manufacturing Concerns
Henry Colbeck’s fleet of vehicles consume half a million litres of fuel annually and the company decided to investigate how cost savings could be made through the production of its own biofuel. The project would also allow the firm to make an important environmental contribution.
MAS Diagnostic
Following several meetings with the Managing Director Andrew Naylor, it was decided to part fund a project manager by Wayne Hayes Consultants to oversee the installation and commissioning of the process plant. On site works for services (electrical power, air ventilation and building) took four weeks within a dedicated work unit adjacent to Colbeck’s main facility. The process plant was sourced from a Lincolnshire based firm Bio-Pod with commissioning taking only three days on site in Gateshead.
Activities undertaken
MAS advisors worked with Henry Colbeck to ensure they had a comprehensive understanding of their needs before selecting a project manager to oversee building works, services installation and environmental compliance. MAS North East also part funded the project management of the plant installation and commissioning.
Results
- It is envisaged that the company will recover £100,000 investment within 12 months
“We have been using a 50% blend in the fleet for the past three months. Initially, our cost savings will be off set by the need to service more regularly, but we are confident that this will reduce and that we will be able to increase the blend.“ Henry Colbeck’s Managing Director, Andrew Naylor
